Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for the Marcellus High School . The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school's report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Principal Nanette Pauley for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site www.marcelluscs.org or you may review a copy from the Principal's office at your child's school.

For 2010-2011, Marcellus High School made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve. We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

State law requires that we also report additional information:
Process for Assigning Pupils to the School
Students entering grades 9-12 attend Marcellus High School . The principal or the Board may determine that a student in grades 9 -12 may benefit by attending the District's alternative program, Volinia Outcomes School . This determination is based on several factors, including attendance, academics, and/or behavioral record.

The Status of the 3-5 Year School Improvement Plan

In the 2010-11 school year MHS implemented a plan to achieve 4 educational goals. These goals are:

  1. All students will improve their writing skills in every curricular area.
  2. All students will show improvement in the knowledge of social studies.
  3. All students will show categorical improvement in mathematics.

All students will be provided increased opportunity to practice inquiry and reflection in all science classes

Goal #1 All students will improve their writing skills in every curricular area. This goal was chosen based on the analysis of data from the following sources: ACT/ MME English & writing scores, PLAN English scores, and a local writing assessment.

Strategies implemented include: Three ACT-like writing prompts were designed and all 1 st period teachers assigned the writing essays in class on the same day. All students participated and their essays were scored using the ACT Writing Rubric. Teachers analyzed essays and score data and throughout the year, as the prompts were assigned.

Goal # 2- All students will improve their MME mathematical categorical scores to at or above 50% as measured by the mean/ possible points indicated on the MME Summary Report.

This goal was chosen based on the analysis of the following data: MME math sub scores and local assessments
Strategies implemented included:
A review of the alignment of the local math curriculum to the High School Content Expectations for Algebra and Geometry. Math teachers revised the curriculum delivery schedule to match the Michigan Department of Education's Pre- and Post MME Expectations.

Math teachers collaborated and created a district-wide Algebra and Geometry semester and final exam. A Math Lab course was designed and implemented to help meet the needs of students who illustrated the need for extra math instruction and practice. Increased math teacher collaboration time was scheduled throughout the school year.

Goal # 3 -All science students will be provided increased opportunity to practice inquiry and reflection in all science classes. Student scores will improve on the science MME, particularly in the Inquiry and Reflection sub category. This goal was chosen based on the analysis of the following data: MME science scores
Strategies implemented include:
Consistent opportunities for science students to reflect, write and analyze scientific journal articles were incorporated into science courses.

Teachers incorporated increased opportunities for project-based learning in science classes.

Goal #4 - All students will improve their social studies knowledge as demonstrated on the MME Social Studies test. This goal was based on the following data: MEAP Social Studies test data and review of the design of the writing sections of the MEAP, as well as MME social studies scores
Strategies implemented included:
Further development of the economics course

A common assessment was designed for social studies courses.

Core Curriculum

Marcellus High School follows the Michigan Merit Curriculum in all core and elective areas. Committees are formed by content area. They are designed for both scope and sequence. A meeting calendar is set yearly. The curriculum committees are in charge of aligning and updating the curriculum. The state's model, the Michigan Merit Curriculum, is the basis for curriculum development and there are no variances from the State's model. All principals and teachers serve on the curriculum committees. The district provides staff development and training to carry out the task. A copy of the district's curriculum may be obtained at the office of the high school principal . Marcellus School District Policy ensures that all students have the same opportunities to learn the core curriculum. Students receiving special education services follow the core curriculum with appropriate modifications and accommodations as set forth in individual IEP's.

Student Achievement Results:

In addition to the MEAP and MME testing, sophomores take the PLAN test. All students in grades 9-12 participate in common assessments of writing three times per school year.

Communication with the community is a priority and our goals include :

1. the community is regularly informed of our school's progress in all program areas,

2. the community is regularly informed of the opportunities for involvement in our schools and the means to access that involvement.

3. community resources might be employed to improve the quality of the educational experiences made available to students, either through student participation in community experiences or community resources being utilized within the schools.

Types of Parent Involvement
