School Improvement Plan

In the 2007-08 school year MHS implemented a plan to achieve 4 educational goals. These goals are:

1. All students will improve their writing skills in every curricular area.
2. All students will improve their ability to interpret and utilize data.
3. All science students will improve their ability to meet content expectations (P, B, C, or E1.2A-E) within the Scientific Reflection and Social Implications content statement.
4. Students will improve their knowledge of the Core Democratic Values

Goal #1 All students will improve their writing skills in every curricular area. This goal was chosen based on the analysis of data from the following sources: ACT/ MME English & writing scores, PLAN English scores, and a local writing assessment .

Strategies implemented include:

All teachers required students to use complete sentence responses in all curricular areas whenever possible.

All core class curriculum included a required writing assignment (minimum) for each of the first three quarters. The MME holistic writing rubric was used to score all student writing assignments.

Goal # 2 All students will improve their ability to interpret and utilize data.

This goal was chosen based on the analysis of the following data: MME science and math test data and local assessments.
Strategies implemented include:
All social studies, math and science courses included instruction on presentation and interpretation of data.

Goal # 3 All science students will improve their ability to meet the content expectations within the Scientific Reflection and Social Implications content areas.
Strategies implemented include:
Science teachers included three lessons per quarter targeting the scientific reflection content expectations.
At least one scientific reflection lab activity was incorporated into each science course per quarter.

Goal #4 All students will increase their knowledge of the Core Democratic Values.

This goal was based on the following data: MEAP Social Studies test data and review of the design of the writing sections of the MEAP, as well MME/ ACT scores, faculty and student surveys.
Strategies implemented included:
All U.S. History students were required to keep a Core Democratic Values notebook that included definitions and writing about the values.

Parent Involvement Policy

The Marcellus Board of Education believes that the education of our children is the joint responsibility of the school, the parents and the community. To ensure that the best interests of our children will be served, a strong program of school, parent and community communication must be maintained. To achieve these ends the Superintendent and the building principals of Marcellus Schools have created a set of procedures for effective school, parent and community communications at the district and building levels.

Parents will have the opportunity to:

1. Have ready access to information regarding their child's education progress via the internet.

2. Participate in decisions regarding their child's educational program. (IEP's, Career Pathway, and attending VBISD or LMC)

3. Be informed of ways to assist or participate, in their child's educational programs.

4. Serve as volunteers in our schools in support of children's learning. (Classroom, SI Committee, athletic and band boosters)

5. Participate on school committees dealing with the development, implementation or evaluations of school programs.

Communication with the community is a priority and our goals are that :

1. the community is regularly informed of our schools' progress in all program areas,

2. the community is regularly informed of the opportunities for involvement in our schools and the means to access that involvement.

3. community resources might be employed to improve the quality of the educational experiences made available to students, either through student participation in community experiences or community resources being utilized within the schools.

Types of Parent Involvement

Parents are members of the school improvement committee, members of the band and athletic boosters; they help teachers with various activities, chaperone events and trips, class advisors, and organize meals for different athletic programs.

The curriculum committees are in charge of aligning the curriculum. All principals and teachers serve on the curriculum committees. The district provides staff development and training to carry out the task.

Marcellus School District Policy ensures that all students have the same opportunities to learn the core curriculum. Students receiving special education services follow the core curriculum with appropriate modifications and accommodations as set forth in individual IEP's.

Teacher Qualifications

All MHS teaching staff was “highly qualified” as defined by No Child Left Behind (NCLB). A long term substitute teacher was used for special education for the last 3 months of the school year.
