3rd Grade

Reading & Math

   Reading & Language

The 3rd grade reading program is a 100 minute, direct instruction, achievement group program. Project Read, Collins Writing, Accelerated Reader, Literature and SRA are used to reinforce and strengthen language, reading and writing skills.

Open Court Collection For Young Scholars provides some of the literature needed to reinforce the phonetic and language skills. It also provides literacy instruction needed to enhance fluency of reading.

Writing is developed through using the Six Traits & Collins Writing Program.  We use the approach of using FCA's (Focus Correction Areas).

The writing component addresses many of the skills needed to be successful writers.

Writing abilities are very important and are assessed on the MEAP test.

Accelerated Reader is used to enhance the children's independent reading skills and further the pleasure of the reading experience.

Math

Children have a 50 minute instructional period 5 days a week.

Problem solving, critical thinking as well as basic computation skills are addressed on a regular basis.

A hands on  kinesthetic , visual, auditory, and systematic approach is also used in math.

The use of touch points for solving math skills is reinforced as needed.

Math homework is assigned per individual teacher's guidelines.

Homework Guidelines

Children receive homework 2-3 times a week.

The homework includes a variety of activities.

These include: reading stories, writing , and rapid recognition of vocabulary, problem solving and critical thinking.
