Reading & Math

Reading & Language
The 1st grade reading program is a 100 minute, direct instruction, achievement grouped program, based on Project Read, Accelerated Reader, Literature and SRA.
This provides a kinesthetic, systematic, visual and auditory approach to phonetic instruction.
Open Court Collection For Young Scholars provides some of the literature needed to reinforce the language & phonetic skills. It also provides literacy instruction needed to enhance fluency of reading.
Accelerated Reader is used to enhance the children's independent reading skills and further the pleasure of the reading experience.
Writing is developed through using the Six Trait & Collins Writing Program. We use the approach of using FCA's (Focus Correction Areas).
Math
Children are achievement grouped for a 50 minute instructional period 5 days a week.
Problem solving is done in the math groups as well as in concentrated sessions in their homeroom weekly.
A hands on kinesthetic , visual, auditory, and systematic approach is also used in math.
Children are taught how to correctly use touch points for solving math skills as needed.
Math homework is assigned per individual teacher's guidelines.
Homework Guidelines
Children receive homework 2-3 times a week.
The homework includes a variety of activities.
