How Title I Works

The Federal Government provides funding to states each year for Title I. To get the funds, each state must submit a plan describing:

  • what all children are expected to know
  • the high quality standards of performance that all children are expected to meet
  • ways to measure progress.

State Educational Agencies (SEAs) send the money to school districts that qualify through a grant proposal.

The Marcellus Local School District (called a “Local Education Agency,” or “LEA”) identified Marcellus Elementary School as a Title I based on the 2000 census information.

The Title I School (this includes parents, teachers, administrators and other school staff works to:

  • identify students in need of educational help (students do not have to be from low-income families to be helped)
  • set goals for improvement.
  • measure student progress, using standards set forth in the “No child Left Behind” Education Act.
  • develop programs that add to regular classroom instruction

try to involve parents in all aspects of the program.

Title I Program Offers:

  • smaller classes
  • additional teachers and assistants
  • additional training for school staff
  • extra time for instruction
  • a variety of teaching methods and materials
  • counseling and mentoring
  • career awareness

Title I teacher/coordinator and regular teachers work closely together.

The School’s Title I Program is Reviewed each year by administrators, teachers and parents. If goals have not been met, the plans must be revised.

As A Parent, You’re Part of the
Marcellus Title I

You Influence Your Child’s Education more than any teacher or school. Your involvement can boost your child’s achievement! By taking an active role in Title I, you’ll show your child:

** how important he or she is to you

** how important education is to you that you and the school are a team, working to help children succeed.

You Know Your Child Best so, it’s up to you to:

  • share information about your child’s interests, abilities, etc., with teachers
  • judge whether Title I is meeting your child’s needs
  • speak up if you notice any problems. (But don’t criticize the school, its teachers or principal in front of your child.)

Marcellus Community Schools
Parents Participation Policy

The Marcellus Board of Education believes that the education of our children is the joint responsibility of the school, the parents and the community. To ensure that the best interests of our children will be served, a strong program of school, parent and community communication must be maintained.

To achieve this goal the Superintendent, and the building principals of Marcellus Schools have created a set of procedures for effective school, parent and community communications at the district and building levels.

Parents will have opportunities to:
1. have ready access to information regarding their child’s educational progress.

2. participate in decisions regarding their child’s edu- cational program.

3. be informed of ways to assist or participate, in their child’s educational program.

4. serve as volunteers in our schools in support of children’s learning.

5. participate on school committees dealing with the development, implementation or evaluation of school programs.

For the community communications, such opportunities for community involvement in the schools and the school’s involvement in the community so that:
1. the community is regularly informed of our school’s progress in all program areas.

2. The community is regularly informed of the opportunities for involvement in our schools and means to access that involvement.

3. community resources might be employed to im- prove the quality of the educational experiences made available to students, either through student participation in community experiences or commu- nity resources being utilized within the schools.
